food insites: website evaluations - by teachers, for teachers and learners

The Food In-sites evaluations have been carried out by practising food technology teachers for their relevance and value to food education against the following specific criteria.

Food In-sites evaluation criteria
Content

  • what is the target audience, egs. teacher, student (age range)?
  • is it a company (retailer, manufacturer), association, etc. site?
  • is it consumer information, marketing or education led (relevance to education?)
  • content - quality and quantity
  • what is the range of services and information offered?
  • is the site regularly and usefully updated?

  • Presentation
  • site layout - is information clearly and attractively presented?
  • download time - can you access the site quickly, or is there lots of waiting time?
  • is it easy to navigate through the site?
  • is it motivating to the user?

  • Educational value
  • is the site supportive of food education generally, egs. Food Studies, Food Science & Nutrition, Food Technology, Home Economics?
  • does it promote and support a lively interest in food - some or a range of aspects?
  • does it use an interesting, novel or noteworthy approach?
  • does it provide quality, depth and range of information, ideas, guidance?
  • is it supportive of school and/or home learning?
  • does it have ‘come-back’ value - is the site worth regular, or only occasional, visits/for lots of things or only a few specific things?

    top banana! a site well worth visiting, either because it does many things usefully, or one or two specific things very well and has a range of applications to food education
      some useful features and a good source of information for supporting food education, would sustain regular visits
      has something to recommend it and material that would be useful, even if only for occasional visits
      just about worth a visit, but unlikely to yield much of use or value
      insufficient benefit, doesn’t really warrant a visit - either poor quality content or just too little that is relevant
